The Amalfi Coast is a natural paradise, a breathtaking landscape declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997. Positano with its sheer terraces looks like a balcony suspended between the blue of the sea and the blue of the sky while Amalfi, ancient Maritime Republic, with its show of colours welcomes the most ancient monuments famous all over the world. Its panorama, winding between the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento Coast, is the setting for one of the most famous hiking trails, the so-called "Path of the Gods".
Its panorama, winding between the Amalfi Coast and the Sorrento Coast, is the setting for one of the most famous hiking trails, the so-called Sentiero degli Dei (God’s trail). The name of the path has a mythological origin and refers to the famous episode of the Odyssey, in which Ulysses tied himself to the mast of the ship to resist the song of the Sirens, who were on the island of Li Galli, the archipelago off Positano. According to the myth, the Path of the Gods was the path the Gods followed to save Odysseus. It is about 10 km long and can only be covered on foot. Depending on the starting point, it follows different itineraries. For example, the Sentiero Basso (Low Path), recognised as the most famous, starts in Bomerano, a hamlet of Agerola and ends in Nocelle, in the upper part of Positano. It follows the Sentiero Alto (High Path), starting from Santa Maria del Castello and arriving at Bomerano, which is considered more difficult because the path is uphill. Alternatively, another starting point can be from the town of Praiano, where the pass of Colle Serra represents the beginning of the path.
The beauty of this path lies in the fact that man has not in the least affected what mother nature has created. In fact, the hand of man is evident only because of the presence of protective barriers and special signs along the entire route. If you plan to totally immerse yourself in nature, this is the hike for you. It takes about 7 hours (round trip) to walk the entire path, but of course it also depends on how fast you walk. In the most difficult and inaccessible points, among the panoramic terraces, you will be able to admire the Li Galli archipelago, the Faraglioni of the island of Capri, Punta Penna and the Monti Lattari and to recover your energy, you can stop for a few moments at the various springs of fresh drinking water before continuing the walk. It’s not an easy walk, but at the same time it’s not particularly demanding; remember to wear comfortable clothing and shoes and bring water and food with you… But what you absolutely must have is a camera with which to immortalise the beautiful views to take home.
Bomerano, a hamlet of Agerola and the starting point of the more famous Sentiero Basso (Low Path), is easily reached by public transport. SITA buses leave from Naples, Castellammare di Stabia and Amalfi.
The Amalfi Coast remains one of the most fascinating places in the Mediterranean, attracting millions of visitors every year. There are those who choose to reach these locations by land and immerse themselves in nature at 360° discovering adventurous trails and scenic routes, or those who choose the relaxation and tranquillity of an excursion by sea, thus avoiding the crowds of tourists especially in high season. In regards to this, I recommend you to join one of our boat tours to relax on board of a comfortable "gozzo sorrentino" in the company of a small group of guests and enjoy a glass of wine in the waters of the archipelago of Li Galli.
