The Path of the Gods: a day immersed in nature

Its panorama, winding between the Amalfi Coast and the Sorrento Coast, is the setting for one of the most famous hiking trails, the so-called Sentiero degli Dei (God’s trail). The name of the path has a mythological origin and refers to the famous episode of the Odyssey, in which Ulysses tied himself to the mast of the ship to resist the song of the Sirens, who were on the island of Li Galli, the archipelago off Positano. According to the myth, the Path of the Gods was the path the Gods followed to save Odysseus.

The beauty of this path lies in the fact that man has not in the least affected what mother nature has created. In fact, the hand of man is evident only because of the presence of protective barriers and special signs along the entire route. If you plan to totally immerse yourself in nature, this is the hike for you. It takes about 7 hours (round trip) to walk the entire path, but of course it also depends on how fast you walk. In the most difficult and inaccessible points, among the panoramic terraces, you will be able to admire the Li Galli archipelago, the Faraglioni of the island of Capri, Punta Penna and the Monti Lattari and to recover your energy, you can stop for a few moments at the various springs of fresh drinking water before continuing the walk.

How to get to the Path of Gods?

Bomerano, a hamlet of Agerola and the starting point of the more famous Sentiero Basso (Low Path), is easily reached by public transport. SITA buses leave from Naples, Castellammare di Stabia and Amalfi.

• From Amalfi you leave from the terminus which is located near Piazza Flavio Gioia: the SITA bus is direct and takes you to Agerola-Bomerano.
• From Naples the departure is scheduled from the terminus at Varco Immacolatella and from Via Marina Porta di Massa, with a stop in Via Ferraris (INPS).
• If you are staying in Sorrento, take the bus to Amalfi via Positano and, once you arrive in Piazza Flavio Gioia, take the Amalfi-Agerola bus.
• If you are staying in Positano, take the bus from Positano to Amalfi and then the Amalfi-Agerola bus.

The trail ends in Nocelle, in the upper part of Positano. You can reach the centre via a long staircase (1500 steps) and about 500 meters walk. Alternatively, there is a bus service. From Positano there are buses and ferries back to Sorrento and Amalfi. As an alternative to the bus, you can think about renting a car or a scooter that will allow you to live your day independently.

The Amalfi Coast remains one of the most fascinating places in the Mediterranean, attracting millions of visitors every year. There are those who choose to reach these locations by land and immerse themselves in nature at 360° discovering adventurous trails and scenic routes, or those who choose the relaxation and tranquillity of an excursion by sea, thus avoiding the crowds of tourists especially in high season.
