Declared a Biosphere Reserve in 2009, Fuerteventura is the second largest island in the Canary Islands, and is known worldwide as a year-round vacation destination, thanks to its subtropical climate. Famous for the immensity of its volcanic landscape, and the purity of its beaches, due to its warm but windy climate, it is especially popular among water sports lovers, and also anyone who wishes to relax by the sea.
If this is your dream vacation, don’t miss the wonderful beaches of Fuerteventura, discovering how each of them is perfect for a particular sport. From surfing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing to scuba diving or simply relaxing on the beach.
As mentioned above, each beach of this beautiful Canary Island is peculiar in its own way, making it possible to practice the water sport you prefer. Here's a list of the main beaches I’d like to suggest:
The most popular beach in the south of the island is definitely Playa de Sotavento: a pristine and immense expanse of white sand that opens onto a beautiful turquoise sea. The peculiarity of this beach is that, at the fall of the tide, suggestive dunes form on the beach, creating small pools of crystal clear water. Sotavento beach is undoubtedly one of the largest and most famous beaches on the island; as its name indicates, it is constantly buffeted by the wind. Precisely for this reason, it is particularly appreciated by lovers of windsurfing and kitesurfing.
With about 4 km of breathtaking beach, you’ll fell like in the Caribbean... The Corralejo Natural Park is located north of Fuerteventura. Here too you will find a wonderful expanse of white sand and a crystal clear sea. This beach is perfect if you are traveling with your family, as it offers well organized bathing facilities, perfect even for little children. In short, thanks to the presence of all the comforts, is the ideal place if you choose to spend a day doing nothing, enjoying the warm sun of the Canary Islands alternating with a refreshing swim.
Located on the west coast of Fuerteventura, lies one of the most beautiful seaside places: Playa del Águila, or better known as "Playa de la Escalera". A small paradise where the untamed sea bathes its golden sandy coastline, and uncontaminated nature surrounding it. Perfect for those who want to spend a few hours in absolute peace, or ride the waves practicing surfing. Unlike the previous one, there are no bathing facilities or kiosks here; if you decide to spend your day in Playa del Águila, bring water and a packed lunch. Remember that, to reach this beach you will have to walk 130 steps; although tiring, step by step, you will find that it will be absolutely worth it!
What was once a simple fishing village, virtually unknown, is now among the most popular destinations for surfing enthusiasts. El Cotillo is located on the northwest coast of Fuerteventura, considered one of the most popular beaches in the island. Thanks to the constant presence of wind, it is the perfect place for surfers, but also for those who are moving the first steps in this sport, given the long waves that reach the shore. Near the beach, you will also find several water sports schools suitable for every level. In addition, during low tide periods, some areas of El Cotillo are transformed into natural pools of crystal clear water, thus converting the beach into a small corner of paradise.
Last, but not least, Playa El Matorral located in the town of Morro Jable, in the south of Fuerteventura. The promenade that runs along the picturesque El Matorral beach is perfect, if you love to walk around. With about 3 km of beautiful beach, with immaculate sand, get lost in its beauty spending a day in the sun, diving and lots of fun. It is also perfect for the whole family, given the presence of small organized facilities in the surrounding area. Ideal location for windsurfing, some well-guarded areas of the beach are dedicated to swimmers and those who want to snorkel in total safety, without running into surfboards.
As you may have read, Fuerteventura is one of the destinations that most attracts those who decide to spend a real beach vacation. It is perfect for water sports lovers... and not just them, as there is no shortage of different attractions, such as botanical gardens, amusement parks and hiking trails that will allow you to experience the island from a different perspective.
