Tenerife is an extraordinary island that can satisfy all tastes: young people and families, nature lovers and nightlife enthusiasts. So if you're wondering what to see in Tenerife, you'll find plenty of options. The most renowned tourist destinations in Tenerife are Puerto de la Cruz, La Orotava, Isla Baja, Playa de las Américas, and Los Cristianos. The southern part of Tenerife, from Candelaria to Santiago del Teide, has been rapidly developing in recent years from a tourism perspective thanks to its wonderful beaches. Tenerife’s main attractions are, of course, its golden sand and volcanic rock beaches. For sea lovers, must-see spots include Arona, Costa Adeje, Playa Teresitas, Lago Martianez, Bajamar, and Punta del Hidalgo, while hiking enthusiasts will be thrilled by the Anaga Mountains, the Teide National Park, the Barranco del Infierno, the Corona Forestal Nature Park, and the Cueva del Viento Sobrado, a volcanic tunnel stretching over 17 kilometers. Tenerife also features several archaeological sites, notably La Cambados, El Barranco del Rey, and the pyramids of Güímar.
Tenerife boasts rich marine biodiversity, with over twenty different species of marine mammals living in its ocean waters, from the majestic blue whale to playful dolphins that have chosen to settle here permanently. The best area for whale watching in Tenerife is the southwest coast of the island, where many sperm whales and short-finned pilot whales live. In Tenerife, it is possible to observe cetaceans in total freedom, without taking anything away from Loro Parque, the island’s famous nature park where many marine species can also be seen. But being able to feed or swim with dolphins and whales under the guidance of professionals who ensure the responsible conduct of this whale watching activity, fully respecting the laws that aim to ensure a happy and protected life for these marine creatures, is a one-of-a-kind experience.
The most famous beaches in Tenerife are Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos, located near nightlife spots and always very busy, especially during peak season. Playa de las Américas is the main tourist destination in the southern part of Tenerife, situated on the sunny southwestern coast of the island, facing the nearby La Gomera and next to Los Cristianos. It features a beautiful long golden beach, with sand imported from Africa, where you can enjoy paragliding and various water sports. Los Cristianos, on the other hand, is also located along the island’s southwestern coast and boasts two stunning golden sand beaches, including Las Vistas, a Blue Flag beach equipped with all the amenities. Among the most naturally beautiful beaches are Playa de la Tejita, one of the largest and widest beaches in Tenerife with its sensational colors ranging from beige to red; El Duque, on Costa Adeje; and Playa Montana Amarilla in the south of the island, a true wild gem where the black of volcanic rock meets the golden tones of a rugged coastline shaped by the wind into forms unlike any other in the world.
Tenerife is a multifaceted island full of surprises. The most convenient way to get around Tenerife is by renting a car, so you can easily reach the island’s various attractions from north to south. Be mindful of the elevation changes, though: Tenerife shifts from almost desert-like, African-looking landscapes in the south, where you’ll drive among cacti and white sand, to the high peaks of the island’s center near Mount Teide, and the dramatic northern coastline with its bays and breathtaking views. The recommendation, therefore, is to rent a car that allows you to navigate both the cities and the mountains of Tenerife.
Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and has two airports: one in the north of the island, known as the Tenerife North Airport or Los Rodeos (TFN), and one located in the south, called Reina Sofía (TFS), more commonly known as the Tenerife South Airport.
The volcanic island of Tenerife is located between the island of Gran Canaria and the small, charming island of La Gomera. With its triangular shape, it is home to the highest peak in Spain, Mount Teide, rising 3,718 meters above sea level and surrounded by extraordinary natural beauty.
Tenerife is a Canary Island, so you’ll find typical Canarian dishes such as mojo, churros de pescado, gofio, rancho canario, conejo al salmorejo, quesillo, and Canarian chorizo. Potatoes, in particular, have been cultivated here for over 400 years and are a staple of the local diet. The papas antiguas, or ancient potatoes, have Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status as Ancient Potatoes of the Canary Islands.
The excursion in Tenerife is carried out on a very comfortable sailing boat, fully eco-friendly and capable of safely and privately accommodating 7 people on board. The yellow “Blue Boat” flag certifies the professionalism of the operators in conducting whale watching activities.
The sailing boat excursion in Tenerife includes a professional skipper, snorkeling equipment to enjoy the underwater scenery, all kinds of drinks, snacks, and a variety of sandwiches.
The experience lasts about 3 hours, during which you can spot whales and dolphins, enjoy a stop for swimming and snorkeling, and taste some snacks on board.
